Thirty-four New Swiss guard recruits attend a swearing-in ceremony at the Vatican 06 May 2008. Thirty-four new halberdiers of the famous Pontifical Swiss Guard swore allegiance to Pope Benedict XVI as the world's smallest army marked its 501st anniversary. The swearing-in ceremony of new Swiss guards traditionally takes place on May 6, the anniversary date of the defense of Pope Clement VII by the corps during the sack of Rome by the army of Charles V in 1527.
