I guess I should say I am not in the slightest bit embarrassed by my instantaneous response to Obama's words. His speech remains one of the finest given in my adult life-time by a leading politician on a subject as fraught as race. I am not afraid to gush when I feel it's warranted - and when we're dealing with an historic candidacy framed by the deepest wound in American history, an utter refusal to be open to the moment strikes me as inadequate. I think that captures it pretty well, actually. Although plenty of unsophisticated outsiders have the empathy and curiosity to think beyond their existing prejudices and political allegiances.
