Silver Lining Watch
A reader writes:
The real point of my email though is in response to your post "Use Your Smart People Wisely." I am currently employed with a large British bank (recently taken
over by the UK government) in their US securities subsidiary. I am an
Ivy League graduate (3 years out of school) who majored in creative
writing. I live in Fairfield County, CT. In order to be able to
afford a place to live, pay my student loans and maybe even save for my
future, I took a job in finance. I fought myself the entire time. It
never felt quite right.
Long story short, my company is in a bad way.
I am
going to have to look for a new job now. I am considering going back
to school to get my MFA and teach writing. That would give me the
opportunity to write at the very least, but it would be difficult to
service all the new debt in addition to my current load. Some people
will be able to pursue new paths, some won't. So, there is some
positive that will potentially come of this mess for me and thousands
like me. It will have taken the financial crisis of our lives to lead
me toward a more fulfilling and productive career.
