Why We Need A Solid GOP
A reader worries about a Republican meltdown. So do I for the same reasons:
As a Democrat who crossed over to vote Republican only once in her
life, I should be delighted at
what you wrote. Especially in light of my support
for the Obama campaign and McCain's swan-dive this week into the Rove
abyss. But I feel oddly depressed. It took me a while to figure out why.
The biggest thing I have learned in all this was that we need two viable parties in
this country (if not more). I don't want the Democrats running wild any
more than I do the Republicans.
We saw where that got us the last seven
years. I am sick to death of destructive partisanship, cultural warfare and the
dumbing-down of politics. We need the GOP to right its ship with
responsible leadership. We need them to be healthy. I can't believe
there aren't good men and women in the Republican party who can do this.
God help us if there isn't.
Those
of us who consider ourselves conservatives will have a responsibility
to try and constructively repair the GOP if they self-destruct. It will
take work and some mutual forgiveness. And the work has to start at the
core level of political philosophy. I made my contribution here. We may
have a long time to debate it.
