Obama's Triumph?

Michael Tomasky thinks liberals should be thrilled by the stimulus package. He makes two clear points: there's $500 billion of spending in it, clearly shifting the US in a different direction; and if it needs adjusting, it can be adjusted. For my part, I just don't know if it will work as some hope. I do know it's a start and, yes, I'm less fussy about spending in a depression than in normal times. It's also just the beginning of two years of impossible-to-predict recession-politics. The bank fix will be just as important. What Obama is doing is a) a huge start and b) one in which he seems able to command the public's trust. In the long run, those two matter far more than the cable 24-hour spin.
