Just a minor note. I've gotten all sorts of nutty threats over the years, inflammatory emails, curses, and so on.

Like most people who have web-based skin, this doesn't much affect me. Only once when I was warned that I might find my skull cracked open in a dune did I really get concerned.

But I do recall vividly the book tour for Virtually Normal, when the gay left furiously picketed the first major book to make the case for marriage equality. A group called "Lesbian Avengers" made up some posters to picket a reading of mine at a Chicago bookstore. This will be fun, I thought. But they had put a picture of my face on a poster and placed cross-hairs/gun sights over it. It looked as if I was being targeted by a rifle.

I thought it crossed a line. I still think it does. And they were a fringe group, not a former vice-presidential candidate.
