The Rumors Of Benghazi

Jon Lee Anderson reports from Libya:

As Qaddafi’s forces have come closer to Benghazi, ... hopeful rumors have been flying through the city. Yesterday, it was that a government pilot sent to bomb Benghazi had instead unloaded his bombs on the airstrip of Sirt, Qaddafi’s stronghold, and then headed to Tripoli, where he flew his plane, kamikaze style, into Qaddafi’s base, killing himself. The facts are hard to find here, and lately, have become extremely elusive as the revolutionaries try to counter Qaddafi’s predictions of their imminent annihilation with their own claims of unseen and unverifiable battlefield victories.
